How to review and close your month with a budget

A month-end review takes about fifteen minutes. You check the totals, compare them with the plan, make one change and close the month. Doing this every month is what makes a budget improve over time.

Step 1: Check the totals

Look at money left, total spending and bills still to pay. Make sure every bill for the month is marked paid, and every card purchase is in its billing cycle.

Step 2: Compare with the plan

Open the spending analysis and compare each category with the limit you set. Note the one category that went over the most. Do not look for someone to blame; look for the cause.

Step 3: Make one change

Pick a single change for next month, such as a lower grocery limit or a fixed savings amount that rises by ₹500. One change at a time is easier to keep.

Step 4: Close the month

Close the month with the date your salary arrived. The month is then locked, and the next month opens for new entries. Your history stays available to compare later.

  • Check money left and unpaid bills
  • Compare each category with its limit
  • Make one change for next month
  • Close the month on the salary date

Questions people ask

When is the best time to review?

Right after the salary has arrived and the last bills of the month are paid, so the figures are complete.

What if I forget to close the month?

Close it when you remember. The totals are the same, and closing only locks the numbers.

Can I reopen a month?

A closed month is locked to keep its numbers safe. Make changes in the next open month instead.
