How to pay your credit card bill on time

Paying a credit card bill late can add fees and interest. The habits that prevent it are simple: know the due date, pay before it, and understand what the minimum due does and does not cover.

Know your due date

The statement date and the due date are different. The due date is the day your payment must arrive. Write it down for every card you own.

Pay the full bill when you can

Paying the full statement amount avoids interest on purchases in most cases. If you cannot pay in full, pay as much as you can above the minimum due.

Track each card's bill

In budgetbaba, add each card and record its payments against the billing cycle. A cycle shows Due, Part paid or Paid, so a missed bill is easy to spot.

  • Note the due date for each card
  • Pay the full bill when possible
  • Record every payment against its cycle
  • Keep money aside before the due date

Questions people ask

Is paying only the minimum due safe?

It avoids a late fee, but interest is charged on the unpaid balance. Pay as much as you can.

What if I am late?

Pay as soon as you can and contact the card issuer if you need help. Late fees can apply.

Can I pay before the statement date?

Yes. Paying early reduces the balance that the next cycle carries forward.
