Credit card billing cycle explained

A billing cycle is the period between two statement dates. Purchases in that period appear on one bill, which is paid by its due date. Knowing your cycle helps you time big purchases and plan payments.

Statement date and due date

The statement date is the day the bill is produced. The due date comes a few weeks later, and it is the date by which payment must arrive. Purchases made just after a statement date usually fall into the next bill.

Plan purchases around the cycle

If a large purchase is coming up, making it just after a statement date gives the longest time before the next due date. Check your card's terms for the exact grace period.

  • Statement date: when the bill is made
  • Due date: when payment must arrive
  • Purchases after a statement go to the next bill
  • Check the grace period on your card
